What is going on here, why do RSRs starting up sound like a sword is being drawn from a metal sheath with all those metallic noises. Is it a different starter motor from what we have in our 996 turbo/non turbos? a few sound clips to give example NIGHTRUN 2 // Road Legal 996RSR | Liverpool - YouTube most clear clip ^ some others Porsche 996 GT3 RSR - Loud Start Up and Idle Sounds! - YouTube Porsche 996 GT3 RS by ProSpeed (racing since 2006) - YouTube

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

oh man, thanks for posting that
Nice.
I thought only Suzuki Samurais made that sound on startup.
That's awesome!
Damn, that street legal RSR is nice...the things I would do with that
Sounds about normal to me. Competiion cars have less sound deadening. Firmer bushings. Headers. More highly tuned engines. They always sound harsher than their street counterparts and this includes during starting too. Even street engines can be a bit harsh when starting especially in enclosed spaces. I remember a few years ago in a fast food drive through line waiting for my order I turned off the engine of my 2006 GTO. As soon as I saw my order coming towards the window I started the engine and the sound caused the person at the window to jump.
