1999 Carrera 4 with PCM1 and DSP After skimming 7 pages of threads in the 996 forum with the word "PCM" in the title I have surmised that it is a pain-in-the-butt task to upgrade this system and requires replacement of the amp as well as the head-unit. So - to the guys that have done this, did you use one of the prewired harnesses / kits like those sold through CAI? Was it worth it? Did the harnesses make it more of a plug and play operation or was there still a lot of cutting, splicing, and soldering? The CAI Alpine amp and kit alone is almost $1000 which is about 2X the cost of just the amp. This leads me to believe there is a lot effort involved preparing the wiring and getting the harnesses right. I'm planning to undertake this task soon (depending on the total cost) and based on a bunch of Google searches the web is remarkably light on photo-documentation for upgrading PCM1 systems. I'm new the the 996 world but have had my 928 for over 8 years so I'm no stranger to Porsche electrical systems, but the way they have the PCM/DSP/amp so integrated means no simple and cheap solution from what i can tell.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
