Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Are the benefits of an early 996 build really worth seeking specifically for? Cable throttle + Dual row IMS obviously are both a plus, but looking only for an early 1999 build really limits the options on the market. It also seems like a good amount of 996s have the IMS situated already. Is getting an early build really the way to go? I definitely am looking for a "drivers car", but I can't imagine a later build 996.1 or .2 being THAT much less responsive and analog feeling. P.S. Message me if you want to buy or trade for my e36 m3 so I can finally get into a 996.

POST 2Original post

I've not driven a cable throttle car for a little while now, but my 2001 'early car' does not leave me feeling remote or detached and I honestly can't say I noticed much, if any difference in feel. I appreciate the tuning element might be easier with a cable throttle, but other than that, I think the cable throttle thing might be one of those things that gets a little over-hyped. Dual row IMS, yeah, that's a bonus for sure, but still no guarantee.

POST 3Original post

There are basically two 1999 996 examples to consider, the early cars are identified by the build date and the amber lights front and rear, the later build 1999s have clear lenses. Any 1999 C2 will have the cable throttle and the other items that differentiate it from a model year 2000. Our cars are becoming more appreciated in the market so has with most models when this happens the market looks for uniques model features I believe that is where the early 1999 cars fall. I own five 1999 models both early and late examples. I have owned and driven fly by wire 996 cars including a C4S the gas pedal sensation can be felt when you jump from one to the other but not really if you just drive one consistently. if you get a 996 you will get to enjoy a Porsche that has the characteristics of a true drivers car, good luck in your search. POST 5Original post

Any early 996 is a rising commodity but add a pre2000 coupe with aero or lsd or low production color and you’ll have a future money rocket uniqueness sells and I love the lightness feel as well

I wouldnt limit your search to just the 1999. You would be missing out on too many opportunities. I am an unapologetic 996 enthusiast of all model years and types. But to say the 1999 is the only 996 to own is silly as hell. Live a little, check out a few 996.1s and 996.2s. I love the 996.1s, but prefer the 996.2 engine and looks. So I have owned my 996.2 for 23 years and will never get rid of it. All 996 model years and types are worthy. Just comes down to finding one that matches your personal preferences and has been properly serviced.

POST 7Original post

For me it comes down to the differeence between the 3.4L vs. the 3.6L engines. IMSB, RMS, AOS can all be mitigated, but piston coating technology is drastically different between the two. My preference is the 3.4L.

POST 8Original post

Yeah, there are pluses to the 99 cylinder coatings and minuses to the 3.4 "5" chain versus 3.6 "3" chain and extra HP/TQ. It all comes down to personal preferences and service history. Can't go wrong with either. Regardless of 996 year, you still have to run great oil, change it often, upgrade the AOS, refresh the IMSB and keep the water pump fresh. But the end result is the same. An incredible driving experience.
