Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 99 996 makes a loud screeching sound for no more than about 1 second max. it does it regardless of temperature, or how little /much, calmly, enthusiastically driven prior to the next time i start the car. I would say it makes the noise 3-4 times out of every 10 startups. I have been advised that it is the starter and that it needs to be replaced. No problem, if it has to be done, i will do it. BUT, can i prolong the life of the starter, or fix it, or do anything at all to eliminate the need to replace it. Or, if anyone else has had this noise, is it something else entirely that can be fixed. All ideas and opinions welcome. Thanx to all in advance. Peter

Take it to a starter rebuild company, they should be able to rebuild any windings, etc, they're all about the same inside anyway.

POST 3Original post

It may just need a bearing or something simple.
