Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey this may be a stupid question. Everytime I wash my car and I open my engine bay lid, water pours into the engine bay. I know the water just drips down into the vents of the spoiler, is there a drain or something that could be clogged. I can't tell you how many time I've opened it up and been rained on...

POST 2Original post

I've noticed the same thing. Is it more one side than the other? There appears to be drain holes on both sides for when the lid is down. Maybe some compressed air could be sprayed in the holes to try clearing any possible blockage. It is kind of spooky to see more water than liked pouring out after lifting the lid.

POST 3Original post

I put a towel over the engine and close the hood down then after Ive got the car wash and dry I take it out. it gets most all of it

POST 4Original post

A little water wont hurt the engine..... most if not all the electrical are sealed. But those damn coil packs.... they suck.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You would think Porsche would have designed that a little better.... Obviously i haven't been washing the car lately but I saw a picture of a 996 turbo and they had a plastic shroud surrounding the fan, i bet it keeps the water out...

POST 6Original post

ever open the engine after its been sitting in the rain? its dry in there....maybe Porsche did its job and you just have to stop using that hose to wash your car or not

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It does it after it rains too.... Look here:

POST 8Original post

I think what he is talking about is how when opening the engine lid there is water held in the lid that drains out of hole from top of the lid on the left or right when closed that is the low side when it is open. My right side likes to hold a little water and take a pee down the right sided rim the hinge is on. The airbox is designed with holes to allow water that goes down the air intake hole to drain out. So thats no problem.

+1

POST 10Original post

I have noticed that also. Also after a wash starting the car the voltage needle swings back and forth for a few seconds. Maybe it gets some water in the alternator. I always drain that rear lid after a wash so it won't sit there for a week or so.

POST 11Original post

yea - I know what you meant - was just messin with ya...funny like you say, its like its full of water and when inverted it all pours out...there must be a stuck drain - I never looked for one though

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That plastic shroud i posted above could stop the water from pouring on the engine.. too bad its for the TT. The only way to drain the water out is to pour it all over the engine.. haha.

POST 13Original post

remember the guy last year that parked under a broken down spout, then went of vacation came back tried to start the car and ruined his engine.... May not be the "exact" story, But its close.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Kyle, dont you have the same problem with water on the engine too?

POST 17Original post

There are small holes at the bottom edge of the lid in the corners that appear to be where water will normally run out. I think I'm going to try a can of compressed air for blowing off computers and such to see if it dislodges anything so that it drains nicely. The thin red straw for directing the air might be helpful when blasting air in there by sticking up in thee in different angles.
