Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

There is some sort of thick type liquid, maybe grease on the inside of my rims. I am currently at work so unable to look at it in depth. Is there a grease fitting or something under there? Just trying to find out what I need to do to fix it. By the way I have a C4 so it may have something to do with the axle? TIA

It is a MK1 c4 it is on the front left rim. How much is a cv boot?

POST 5Original post

If its the boot, they don't cost much, its the installed price that gets you!

I just got under it and looked and it is the axle boot. It has a small crack and the grease is coming out of it. Is there a DIY for something like this? How many hours is it to replace it? It is working perfect, just leaking so thankfully I don't need a new axle. Should I drive on it?

POST 7Original post

I dont think driving it will hurt, but might make the mess bigger... I dont know about the front axle but I just took the front spindles off and it wasnt too hard... (C2)

POST 8Original post

You don't want to drive on a torn boot as when the cv joint runs out of lubrication, it get's damaged pretty a quickly. Especially if moisture gets in the boot. Sounds like you caught in pretty early so, have the boot replaced as soon as possible.

yeah it's bad to drive with a torn boot but I have driven my own cars and had customers put thousands of miles on on torn boots. As for cost, a boot is like $50. The labor kills you. This is a possible DIY but I don't with a CV boot job on anyone. I have had 2 cars towed in because the customer got so dirty and frustrated.
