Just got my new key from the Brits in. It has not been programmed. Can I try it to see if it fits the ignition or will the "dismantling" jack my car. Or, if I put my other key in after it will it restore it back? Restated: Can I see if it's a fit prior to programming without it resulting in dismantling the computer and leaving me stranded?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Put the blade in your good key head.
You can just have your good key near the ignition and the new key should fire her up.
First, why try? I put the wrong key in one of my BMWs once. That key was then worthless without reprogramming. It wouldn't start the M3, and the M3 gave it a signal so it wouldn't start the 318. The correct key in the M3 started right up. Since it's a blank, it won't start anything without programming anyway, so you will have to pay to program it one way or the other.
