Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Yeah, and Porsche was 32nd last year. This initial quality survey is pretty worthless in my opinion. It addressed only the first 90 days of ownership. The one that surveys the first three years of ownership, well that one means something. Porsche was second in that one last year (for the 2002 MY). How it got second with all those RMS', I will never know, but I guess it means the rest of the car is screwed together pretty well.
No surprises with Porsche and Lexus in the top two, but Hyundai #3??? With discounts I see Elantras advertised for $10K all the time.
It's the number of reported problems. The BMW M3 was rated very high in 2002, and my engine blew with less than 10K miles. I suppose the blown engine in the M3 counted the same as the rattle in some guy's Infiniti.
I own a Porsche, my wife owns a Range Rover...I guess we cover the whole spectrum. He truck was the same price as my car but she has the added benefit of having the suspension that goes up and down by itself
The thing to remember is that people who buy luxury cars and sports cars tend to be a really finicky crowd so it's not surprising to see BMW and Mercedes drop in the ratings as a result. Moreover, I can just picture all the slightly older people having a conniption in trying to get iDrive and the like to work. Frankly, I think BMW and Mercedes have 'over-electronicized' their cars a bit. That's what I love about 996.....PLUG AND PLAY!
yeah, but the info that you are missing is that dealer begs for all 10's when they know JD will be sending mail. I has happened on several of my dealer interactions with the car I bought new from them. There were times I gave 10's when they did not really deserve it. They get copies of the telephone convo or poll you turn in. So, what are you going to do, they sort of have you by the nuts when your car is still under the original warrantee and you worry about that next thing that will go wrong that they need to decide whether to cover it, give you a loaner, take care of it quickly, etc.
I was not aware at all that JD Power released their survey data back to the dealers. I think you might be mistaken in your assertion, GH. Perhaps you're thinking of the auto manufacturer's server after sale and subsequent service visits?
Nope, I don't think so, but you may be have a point. I have been contacted by JD powers after a few months of owning the car. I was also contacted after service visits and I thought that was JD Powers as well? Anyway after JD Powers called and took survey, I went back in for another electrical problem with the car and the service person thanked me for giving them good marks.... And now that I am thinking of it the sales person asked me to give them all 10's as well when I took delivery of the car. He aplogized for asking but said something about needing perfect scores. Again, on 90 day survey I gave all 10's but at time was suprised at all the things they asked about that Porsche dealer did not go over. Anyway, bottom line is, at least my dealer is made of a bunch of beggars. If they want good marks, its simple give excellent service, and I have found them overpriced and under service. The indies do a better job all around. So some of the marks are inflated.
Wow, that is shocking that JD Power would share the results of YOUR survey with the dealer. It doesn't really foster an environment for being totally truthful if you want your car serviced properly next time it's in the garage. As for ratings, I have vowed never to exaggerate service or dealer performance again. If they want a ten, just like you said, they have to WORK for it the same as I work my **** off for a raise at work.
