Aftermarket warranty can be purchased for about $1600-2000 for 2 yrs. If he wants it, there are a few companies out there. I don't have hands on experience but have heard a lot of them try to weasel out of coverage when you file a claim. To me, it's more troublesome but I understand he may be worried about RMS stuff. Do a search on aftermarket warranty for reputable company. If you have any mods even if it's non-stock wheels/intake or exhaust, don't bother w aftermarket warranty. You'll get declined for any claims.
I had an extended warranty on my current '88 which actually paid off on a couple of issues. However I remember seeing wording to the effect that it does not cover seals. I've seen the same wording in one other extended warranty so careful reading is in order...of course I guess it always is!
Careful reading is very important when it comes to extended warranties as there really is no industry standard and they each pick what they will cover on their own. Some cover turbos, others do not, etc. Another important thing to consider is the labor rate (the amount per hour that the warranty company is willing to pay towards labor on your car). This is important because if your Porsche Mechanic charges $100/hour (which probably isn't the case unless you go to the dealer, I know, but humor me) and the labor rate on your warranty is $50/hour then you will get stuck with some portion of the bill most likely. A lot of extended warranties will not cover rubber components or wear and tear items. In other words you're SOL if you get an RMS leak. When I got quotes on an extended warranty before the factory coverage expired, they wanted something like $4500 (via the dealer) to cover everything 4yrs/100K. I declined, to me an extended warranty is nothing but a bet that you will have a major component failure. My reasoning, I have had my car since new it is well maintained and I have had zero major problems with it, if there was a major defect it would have failed by now. I also only drive about 5K per year so I would never see 100K miles in the next 4 years ( let alone 20 years ), plus the chance of having a major failure (>$4500) in the next 4 years is small IMO. I can say this because I know my car like a book, and I know it has been meticulously maintained by the book. If this was a second hand Porsche I might feel differently.
Anyone have experience with how well the Porsche CPO works? Does it cover issues like seals? Thanks, Dennis
WarrantyDirect.com will give you a quote over the internet. Expect around 3K for 3 years and a bunch of miles for their top of the line warranty. It is good. It has 0 deductible, pay by credit card, pay any hourly rate at any shop, covers everything they don't list, and it's a short list. If it's not on the list, it's covered. Much better to have an exclusive, not inclusive list.
