Could somebody tell me how hard it is to change out the useless cassett drawer which is in the top position of the console (01 Cab) with the standered tray. I see the tray is about $25.00 but really do not want to remove the whole console unit for a change out. Thanks

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just PULL it out.
Open one of the cassette drawers and pull, the whole unit comes out and you can just pop a new storage bin right in.
What Marc said ^ it takes 8.7 seconds to swap them out.
Thanks for the help

We live to serve!
It really IS EASY. I finally got around to taking my center console out to paint it, & I realized 996 interiors are like legos, everything is either unclip, pull, yank, etc. lol. Everything comes off so easy. It really makes you realize that Toyota had more to do with it than it seems.

The guy that sold me the bumper covers told me the exact same thing about Toyota helping with the design... But I'm still waiting for my car! Rudy
no intent to highjack this tread but how easy is it to replace this................
Quotes source post: 6295612
Very easy, pop the side panels off.. I think its held on by 2 screws? maybe a couple more.

Agree the cassette tray is useless, but not bad looking. What are folks replacing it with? Not leaving the area empty, are you??

The "cubby" is the replacement. This and a powered ipod adapter is my next mod - when I get a job...
Quotes source post: 6295853
After learning that it would be some serious $$$ to upgrade the audio, I think I'm going with the cubby + ipod adapter myself.

+1, and I'd rather listen to the car. I plan to use this with a power line noise filter. $45 total plus the price of a cubby. http://www.discountcarstereo.com/detail.aspx?ID=993
There's a guy in Austin who has built a special adapter that works with my radio (CDR-220) that also charges the iPod. It's a little more expensive at $75, but I think it's worth it. See: http://www.austinpe.com/iPorsche.html

Phil, you need to do this mod. It would give you more space on the upper center console to hold the "emptiness" that is prevalent in your car since you never drive it. It would allow you to keep that "emptiness" neatly stored, wrinkle free, and easily accessed. Plus, the cost of the upper shelf is only 1/8th the cost of a sulfated battery.
I saw that on 6 sp---. I think its the same thing I mentioned above, just all in one kit. He did a nice write up on the install.
Quotes source post: 6294894
On a 997 it's only 7.4 seconds however.
Quotes source post: 6296393
0.0 seconds on a 997, because they don't have a CD holder in the center stack.
My 01 cab has no cubby storage because it has the BOSE Digital radio unit in the lower space and cassette drawer in the upper console space. My 99 Boxter had the cubby and I miss the space its great for cell phone, I-Pod etc. So the cassette holder goes. If anybody needs one, I will be happy to give it away if it is not damaged in the removal. Just let me know.

Yeah, he did do a nice job, lots of pics and logical. I would probably thread the iPod cable through the back or passenger side of the cubby, so it's nowhere near the shifter. But that's a nice little kit and instructions.
I have a CDR223. Does that mean his unit won't work at all? What's the difference?
If the model # isn't on the URL I posted earlier, I don't think it will work. I believe it was only for models through '02. I've ordered the cubby and surround for moving the env controls down (won't use it until I go double din). I also ordered the iPorsche kit and will create a thread when I do the install.

Good luck with your search. The cubby can wait.

But, I have a 6-disc player in my trunk. But, since they're the same 6 discs I've had in the unit since I bought the car, I've never used the CD tray. I still think it looks nice. And it's a focus of conversation when the mice talk to me in the garage.

Thanks Phil
The cubby comes in OEM carbon as well. One piece on ebay at the moment.
