Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just noticed my orientation light ( small amber light) was always on as usually keep the doors unlocked in the garage.. Sort of bugged me so I looked it up in the manual and its on when the doors are unlocked and does turn off when I lock the doors. Surprised I havent noticed it on ever.. I dont really like to lock the doors as I go in and out of the car at various time during the week ( not a DD) but dont want this little light on all the time...any way to turn it totally off ??

POST 2Original post

They will turn off after about 2 hours if the doors are unlocked.

POST 3Original post

What is the purpose of the amber orientation light?

POST 4Original post

The purpose of the orientation lights is to cast an orange glow inside to aid in your"orientation" in the car, there's also one behind the driver's door handle that "helps" the driver find the door handle and headlight switch in the dark. It has some info about it in the owner's manual, but there's no controls related to the lights. You could have paid the additional $400 or so for the under seat lighting too.....it has it's own switch.

POST 5Original post

You can dim or brighten the Orientation Lights. There is a very small hole in the dome light cover. If you insert a small screwdriver (jewelers screwdriver) into the hole and push gently, the switch will toggle once. If the lights are currently on dim, they will get slightly brighter, and vice versa. It will be almost impossible to notice the change in the amount of light because the light source is relatively dim, so you should do this at night or in a dark garage. That is the only way you will be able to determine it you have the lights set to "bright" or "dim."

Tim, Marc G, et al, This thread would be a nice addition to the The New Official "Things you didnt know about your 996" thread.

POST 7Original post

Seriously! I found this amber light for the first time two weeks ago. I wondered if it was contributing to my battery drain because at first I thought it was not turning itself off at all (2 hours is a really long delay!). Great tip on the dimmer switch. Thanks!
