Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2003 base 996. Since I got the car in December, sometimes when I park it in the garage I'll come back hours later and notice that the dome light is still on. Usually if I slam the driver side door hard, the light will time out and turn off. Happened today. After I made sure the light went out, I was watching TV and thought about how old US cars had a push switch mounted in the door frame. Open the door, the switch pops up and turns the light on. Close the door, the switch depresses and turns the light off. Maybe it needs a little WD-40 after all these years? I went out and searched the door frame and could not find a switch. So, how does the dome light turn on/off with the door opening/closing and what can I do to make sure it works every time??

POST 2Original post

Its controled by the immobilizer based on inputs from the limit switches in the door lock/handle accuator. There is no plunger or magnet.

In other words, "Electronic #1-#0 Gremlins". Mine won't turn on and yours won't turn off. I'll take my Gremlin over yours bc mine won't drain the battery, another stupid idiot Porsche engineer decision. It's like saying the lights won't turn on bc of X, and Z, plus a possible moon phase and Idiot Merz (Has 3-Stooge Fame and hemorrhoids) and cancelled all "Electronic #1-#0" communications to German cars. I prefer the 996 and early 997 generations rather than the Nanny Specific-Not-Repairable systems in newer P-cars. Your solution and answer may be different, but probably cost a LOT more. If humorous, remember that humor always has some truth in it, otherwise it would not be funny. JMO. YMMV
