I was working on my car last week and I removed the driver's side taillight. I found a cable underneath the light. What does this cable go to and what does it do? I figure it could potentially be for the engine bay release if the battery is dead. But you can't remove the taillight if you don't pop the engine bay first!

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

That is exactly what it is. I would re-route the cable to underneath the bumper.

Interesting! I assume no one has ever taken the taillight off before. So it came like that from the factory then! Where below the bumper should it be routed or located at? Right below it is the muffler. I would think the heat would destroy this cable after some time. Thanks
That is factory location. You can carefully wedge a rubber/plastic spatula between the tail light and bumper to get enough room to hook the release cable with a thin wire, and pull it out to enable release of the engine cover for jump start. It is easier to do then pulling the RF wheel and inner fender.
