Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am thinking about buying a 2000 porsche 996 C4. The carfax says rear wheel drive. should the carfax say all wheel drive? Just because it has "carrera 4" on the back, that could have been added couldnt it? I have the VIN. Thank you!

POST 2Original post

The carfax usually say "Carrera2/4" as the model designation regardless of what the actual vehicle is. Does the car have silver brake calipers or black? Photos from underneath the front of the car will tell the tale.

POST 3Original post

The front trunk is smaller on a C4 then on a C2. The VIN should come up in the insurance company records with the correct model.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

the car has silver break calipers

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The car is a few states away. I wont see it until Saturday. but I have paid no money yet.

POST 6Original post

Look inside the trunk...if the spare is laying down its a C4 if its standing upright it a C2 C4 has silver calipers, C2 black I believe optionally a C4 would have PSM and where the C2 would have TC

POST 7Original post

Jack up one side, ensure the car is in 1st gear, and attempt to spin the front wheel. If it freewheels, C2. If you can feel the mechanical resistance of the front drive (or you see the rear wheel moving when you spin the front wheel), C4. Since you won't have the e-brake on (to allow the rear wheel to turn) - please chock both wheels on the side you're not jacking. If you jack from the rear jack point, this will be sufficient to lift that entire side of the car.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

the car is a couple states away. I do have pics. is there anything other then the silver breaks and the trunk tire laying down?

POST 9Original post

It will be more than obvious when you open the "front" trunk. Is there a pic of it open in the sale ad?

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am working on getting that right now. The add does not have a open front trunk pic, but it does have the carrera 4 on the back, and it does have the silver break calipers. I am awaiting trunk pics.

Yeah, don't do this. even if you could.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hey, stay on topic...lets solve my problem first, then we can debate...pleaseeee

POST 14Original post

Just get the full vin and call any porsche dealer and they will tell you Simple as that

POST 15Original post

Searching for C4 and PSM, I see. All C4 would have PSM and a PSM button standard. While it wasn't standard on a C2.

POST 16Original post

Not standard, true - but "The Porsche Stability Management system (PSM) system became an option for the 911 Carrera in model-year 2000." Its presence will not prove that your 2000 is a C4.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just got the pic of the trunk and the tire is laying flat, as well, I called the dealer and they have it listed as carrera 4 as well. How can I attach pics to this with out http?

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

across the top is a disc changer, a round black thing...shocks? and a liquid container imbedded in a black casing

POST 19Original post

If you have pics posted on Picasa or somewhere else with a URL, put the URL between [img] and [/img] tags.

POST 20Original post

The round black thing in the middle with a (I believe) 10mm nut on each of the 4 corners is the access to the fuel tank. I believe this is also unique to C4s.

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yes, that is exactly how my trunk looks with a tire laying flat and it still has the cd player

+1 But don't make an offer until they fix the "Breaks". If the silver things are Brake calipers then they are probably OK.

A much easier way would be to just look for a front diff and 1/2 shafts.

POST 28Original post

^ Agreed. I believe OP has enough information to identify that it's really a C4 and not a relabeled C2.
