Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey guys, I've been searching around the forum for a while, looking at all the fun "my engine blew up" threads - the 996 is becoming a fantastic value at this point (sub 20k!) and I love value propositions. Anyway my first observation - most people here aren't exactly mechanically inclined, judging by the "engine broke"-"get a whole new engine" mentality. Coming form the 944 forum, are there just no parts available? Even with cracked block, it looks like you swap the whole half (block comes in 2 pieces?) without the need to spring for $12K rebuild on a $18k car. On the more technical note, what exactly is technical issue with rear main seals blowing through - the only time I've seen chronic seal blowage is on 2.7T audi valvecovers, because the breathers clogg up and valve covers build air pressure inside. Second technical issue - what's the problem with the immediate shaft searing off the nut that holds it to the block? Looking at the Total911 pdf, they also claim the the nut holding the shaft on the other side can break off... which one is it? Anyway I'd appreciate any feedback if there are any wrench-happy people on this board.

well, dharn55 did rebuild his cracked cylinder, so it is possible. just takes a lot of knowledge and work and some machining. as far as the IMS bearing failing, Jake can answer best, but consensus seems to be poor quality on the part itself either in design or production quality.
