I am looking to buy a 1999-2002 996. I have found a couple 99-00 for $20K with 50-60K miles. I also found an 02 for $19K with 89K miles. I guess I am wondering what is a better deal. Lower miles older car more miles newer car. I am concerned about IMS so I was wondering if there is a mileage that IMS failure happens at most? Just talked with the guy who has the 02 for 19K and it is the original engine.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

That sort of question will open up a can of worms in replies. You'll get the usual arguments, then there will be the IMS questions etc, then the thread gets out of control as usual. Ask the guy if the IMS fix has been done, if so when and who by. Newer car has some of the kinks out of it. End of day a good pre purchase check by a good porsche mechanic will help you make up your mind. But don't take it as gospel. Search the forums for 996 purchase guide. Someone posted the 996 purchase guide from excellence magazine, it might help you out also.
what part of the country you in....lets have lunch There are 100's of threads on this exact subject, it is very well talked about and I think the best plan is to read and read and read and then make your own judgement calls based on the "opinions" of others. They are all great cars - each a little differant, some people like the older MKI's and some like the newer MKII's - the best thing you can do is buy a "good car" with good service history and no issues. Save some money for the IMS retrofit if you thinks its a good plan and if you can get a warranty... drive several cars, ask lots of questions when driving them. Post things that dont seem right that you cannot find answers to. have fun, and welcome
^ thanks guys.

Agreed, I am newer on this forum but when I started my search I searched and read all over the different forums around. You will find all kinds of answers. When I searched for my 996 I looked at 99-2004s with all ranges of miles as well. But I had a budget. These are all great cars. First figure out your budget (real important), factor in deferred maintenance if there is any, future mods, etc. Then find the car you like. THEN contact sellers (I prefer Private Party as you can get more history than a dealer will) plus you can probably save some $$$. You probably can figure out the rest... Good luck
Have you looked at these cars? What is the overall condition of the 02 with that kind of mileage? Are the seats beat? are the headlights yellowing and stained? Does the car look like it has been well cared for? Have you driven the car? Do you like the color/options etc of that car? Once you answer those questions with a positive answer, then get a pre purchase inspection. Do you know the differences between a 99 and an 02? there are plenty. Don't you hate it when you ask a question and get a bunch of questions in return?
Wow there are a lot of questions there. LOL I don't really know all of the differences between the 2. So I guess I will search that now. Also I have not seen the 02. It is 13 hours away and I would not see it until I picked it up. It just seems like the best deal I have found on an 02. I am in no rush and will wait for the right car,
I would at least drive some local cars to narro wdown the search - C2 C4 Cab, MKI, MKII - then once you know what you like/dislike the pictures and such on an online ad will make more sense... Or do like me and buy one without ever looking at any other one
One thing rarely discussed is the options. One car might have stickered for $80k and another for $110. Used ten years later they may price at $20k and $21 respectively and that may make your decision a little easier if the options are cool. FWIW mine has few options.
^ thanks I will look more at the options now.

Oh that's too cool. I did not know the VIN decoder existed. Thanks.

That VIN decoder is sweet! I've decided to join the water cooled Porsche world and I'm beginning my search for an '02 to '04 996. Wish me luck!
FYI I was on the Porsche official website the other day and saw they offer a search engine for cars at dealers and you can include cars with CPO - which narrowed the results down a bunch.....GL on the search
