POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am really concerned that my 996 is the next 912. A bastard 911. Enthusiasts seem to have passed over the 996 and moved to the 997 as the next 911....I love my car and hoped to keep it fovever. But now I see the that air cooled guys have a real attitude toward my car. They really disrespect my car...I know that Porsche is a 2 syllable word....I am a fanatic about driving and servicing my car. It is a daily driver but SO what!!!,,,its garaged every night and washed 3 times a week....what gives...am I destined to be in the lower class or will the group finally accept me

POST 2Original post

Who cares what the air cooled guys think when they are in our rear view mirrors................

POST 3Original post

All will be forgiven if you get that water pumper out on the track.

POST 4Original post

k964 is right. my c2 logged 3k track miles in 4 months. and i have been chasing a couple of friends in 964. one is fellow rennlister, tom weber.

POST 5Original post

Oh brother! Don't worry about "some people" accepting you. Are you that insecure? Enjoy your car for what it is, and forget everyone else. Did you buy your car because it's a Porsche or because you enjoy it??

POST 6Original post

Strange, 996 may go down in 911 history as the best & the worst.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

YOUR RIGHT K964 IS A FLAMING *******. I IOVE MY CAR. I DRIVE IVE IT EVERY DAY AND LOVE IT....**** K964

POST 8Original post

weissach has it down-who cares what others think?

POST 9Original post

It seems to me that the changes in the 996 from '01 to '02 were almost equal in magnitude to the 996 to 997 transition. The '01 to '02 transition offered a 3.4l to 3.6l upgrade, chassis refinement, aerodynamic improvement, interior upgrades, etc. The 996 to 997 offers a 3.6l to 3.6l upgrade (OK, 3.8l in the S's), chassis upgrade, a new interior, and round headlights. My point is that it would be kind of ridiculous for someone to accept the 997 after rejecting the 996.

POST 10Original post

Porsche instills a kind of passion that turns educated professionals into bickering 7th graders. Sort of comical. Anyway, I'm in the minority and love the 996 headlights, and think the 996s are beautiful (contributing to my purchase last week). From an aesthetic viewpoint, I fail to see why everyone has such a woody for the 997. From pics anyway, it looks like a widebody 996 with oval lamps. Of course, from a performance standpoint, the chassis refinements and suspension overhaul appear to really awaken things. In the end, what really matters is enjoying the drive. The top 10 driver's cars of all time in Excellence were dominated by modern cars: The 996 GT3, 996 TT, 996 C4S, Boxster (yet another bastard child that the purists hate), and of course the GT. The only 993 to make the list was not available in the US, the 993 Carrera RS 3.8. Don't worry about the blind passion the dyed in the wool air cooled guys have, enjoy your car. It's a great one.

POST 11Original post

In my eyes all Porsches are beautiful machines. They each have their own characteristics and soul. If I had the money I would own one of every model (even a 924 ) You would hope that as a car manufacturer Porsche will continue to IMPROVE it's vehicles. I really hope the 997 is an improved 911 from my 996... however, certain cars will tug at your heart strings no matter what. I believe right now that the C4S and Turbo are the most beautiful Porsche's in their history. JMO Rob

POST 12Original post

Even if you buy a Maybach you will still get your share of haters. There are always people in the world who just like to mouth off - it's easy to nitpick and talk trash about anything. I love my 996 (actually I love all four of my cars) and that's that.

POST 13Original post

Yeah, don't worry what others might think... Just get yourself a REAL Porsche. j/k!!! One thing's for sure: Frayed has it right. We do tend to turn into 4th graders (7th graders are way too mature for this particular comparison). Cheers, Chris

POST 14Original post

ninetynine996, you have one of the best car out there. As much as I like the 993 and 964, I'll take a 996 in a heart beat. This is call progress. Some people prefer an air cooled engine to a water cooled one, and this is absolutely fine, why bothered by that ? After all choices are what make this world wonderful. Enjoy your car !!

POST 15Original post

ninetynine99 come to California, and bring your 996 too. We left coasters have a great appreciation for both 912s and 996s. so just chill, and know that you can be proud of your car. BTW: let's see some pictures of your ride.

POST 16Original post

Do you buy a car because you want it or to appeal to anyone's taste? I am enjoying 996 and will probably enjoy 997-998-999 and 1K.

POST 17Original post

I doubt I will be in your rear view mirror but agree with most comments to enjoy your car. Some of us "air cooled" enthusiasts have an appreciation for all 911 iterations.

POST 18Original post

I have a 996 coupe and an '87 911 Carrera coupe in my garage. Guess which one I get into every day to head to work? The air cooled cars are great as toys, but for real world, every day driving where I appreciate power steering and brakes, ABS, smooth shifting, pedals hung from above (like they should be), an A/C system that actually blows cold air, PSM, a decent stereo, and 300 horsepower, the 996 wins by a long, long, long shot. The '87 is a wonderful car to take on weekend trips, as long as the weather is good. I love it too. In fact, I love all Porsches. It's the 'purists' among the owners who can't get over themselves and find something important to discuss, that I can't stand. I never understood their unwillingness to accept development (or reality). PS - I like the 997 better than the 996 if only for the fact that it's the latest, greatest version of the 996.

POST 19Original post

From a technological/performance aspect, I absolutely agree. The newer cars will offer better performance, fuel economy, ergonomics and creature comforts. However, at least for me, that does not translate into "liking" the 997 better than the 996 or the 996 better than the 993.

POST 20Original post

I agree. I'm sure that the 997 is amazing. 911s get better every model, but the 996 is an amazing car, as is the 993. I'm hanging onto my 996 until the Boxster Coupe comes out. If it looks like any of the drawings I've seen, and it they offer a club-sport version, that will be my next Porsche.

POST 21Original post

I also have noticed some air coolers adoring the 997 over the 996 from the moment the first pictures were published, WHY?, because they have the round lights and the blinkers on the fenders (as it resembles the 993). Can you believe it, "sports car enthusiast" liking a newer model because it has round lights and repositioned blinkers, and you want to take these guys seriously. 911's have constantly improved, i am certain the 997 will be an improvement over 996 as 996 was over 993's and so on. Now go out there and enjoy that most advanced porsche in north america todate, as i am sure you do. (As I assume you started the thread for argument sake, and I don't for a second believe you need the 993's approval to enjoy your car, 'cause if it's true you never would have bought a 996 in the first place)

POST 22Original post

Do not get rid of a car that you love, as you say you do. You will only end up regretting the loss. Stay with the original plan and keep it forever! chuck

POST 23Original post

Like many have said, own the car that YOU enjoy, which is all that matters at the end of the day. Looks as though K964 touched a nerve (funny I say that as this morning I had a root canal done ) with the comment on getting out on a track. I didnt take it as a bad comment, but you obviously did. Dont sweat the small stuff. The track is not for everyone really.. I love the 993, it gets the heart rate up every time I drive it.. Doesnt mean I wouldn't like to have a 996 as well. Wish I had more room and money to do so. The only approval you need from is you..

POST 24Original post

I love my 996! It is my fourth Porsche. I had a 1973 914, I loved that one too! I had a 1995 993 cab I loved that one too! The 996 is definitely a much better daily driver! I have never tracked any of my cars and I dont think I have a desire to. I enjoy drving the car the way I do and enjoying it to the fullest! I dont critque others that drive their cars differently, I just dont understand why they critique me?? I'm sure the 997 will grow on me but right now its looks dont impress me as much as the 996 did when it came out... we'll see...

POST 27Original post

Interesting thread….. Although not alienated from the of the imports it makes me wonder if other boards have this same topic come up as frequent as Porsche boards do. I can’t remember in any dealing within the Rotary community where people were so quick to judge the incompetence of a new generation. Of course there will always be critics (and that is fine) but to bash a vehicle that you cannot afford is simply “wrong”. I’m not asking for feedback on this but could you tell me how many 911SC, 964, 993, 944, 928, 924, 356 etc. drivers would dump their car at the closest Pick-A-Part location if they won the lotto? Not all 996 owners were born with a silver spoon (myself included) but I’m not telling you that they aren’t out there…… To each his own, simply put: Just enjoy the ride!!!!!! -Eli

POST 28Original post

The only advice I can offer up is financial advice in this transaction should you choose to go through with it. If you're really looking at getting into a 997, you need to sell the 996 now. Not tomorrow or next week, but right now, because the value is dropping with every day the 997 gets closer to our shores. You don't want the 997 to come out and decide you want one then, because you're going to lose a lot of money between now and then. Good luck with whatever you do.

POST 29Original post

In my opinion the styling of the 996 is superior to that of the 993, and I'm not thrilled with the round headlights of the 997. So, to each his own. What's most important is to own a car that you like, and if others like it, that's fine. If they don't, to hell with them. Who cares. The 996 would be an awsome car if it weren't for RMS, but its styling is fine in my books.
