My 996 died this am in a rather unfortunate place - on a steep incline entrance ramp in a downtown parking garage (apparently I need to go back to manual 101). The parking lot attendant came out with the little jump start cart and proceeded to hook up the red cable to the negative lead. After having a minor heart attack, I stopped him before he could complete the circuit. Apparently there was a little red paint on the negative wire, so he was absolutely convinced thats was where the red cable should go. After 5 minutes of arguing I told him to go to his personal car, open the hood and tell me what he saw. We then jumped the car correctly & I went on my way. It's obvious that reversing the leads would have been bad, but how much damage do you think would have occurred had I let him do it 'his' way?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well an explosion followed by a fire that burned down a city block would be worst case, and a big spark followed by a jerk reaction the least My guess is the big spark would have caught your attention and avoided much worse - but had a good contact been made, oofff-da!

A chain reaction eventually destroying earth... FM
I would say a pretty big one. The law suit from the burns he may have got would have wiped you out.
Wouldn't he most likely have just blown a fuse?

I think the car would have been fine. however the fireworks by crossing 2 batteries woudl have been a sight to see. Hell I have paid to see simular. he is lucky he stopped the guy. The battery MAY HAVE actually exploded spewing battery acid every where.... He averted a possible law suit for sure. What COULD have happened: When he would have touched the jumpers to the led posts, the led posts could have metled and fused the jumpers to the battery, the cables woudl have melted and the batteries woudl have had an unreal load on them.... For kicks in when I was a kid we put a ratchet between two battery posts once. It got red hot.
Well, you're in Illinois. Remember that cow that kicked over the lantern in Mrs. O'Leary's barn in Chicago.....................

No fuses internally in the battery so all that would act as a fuse is the battery acid and stored power spewing all over your car. And yes that ype of even has a fast reaction refered to as an explosion. Acid and arcing hot metal are not good for a car let alone the hot state called an explosion and fire. Saw a truck that got a wrench shorted one time hehehe ate a big chunk of metal out of the comparment. Glad I wasn't there for it. It vaporized half the wrench by the way. During that proccess it was a big fireworks event.

The short term power that can come out of a car battery is really amazing
