Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I did a quick search and I found one case were someone discovered that leaving their key in the ignition would drain the battery. I just bought a new battery last week. I parked the car for the weekend in the garage Friday night, I am sure everything was off. Monday morning the battery is dead, not enough power to even open the trunk. Jumped the car pretty easily, drove it to work and now everything seems fine. So leaving the key in the ignition for a prolonged period (2 days in this case) will drain the battery?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Won't do that again... So does it leave a security measure running or something?

POST 4Original post

that bites. for what its worth my '03 when the car is shut off the park lights will stay on until the key is removed from the ignition. mind you it's a canadian car so things might be different for you. happy motoring. Geoff

POST 5Original post

Just pull the key out and then reinsert and it will not drain the battery.

POST 6Original post

Yes, leaving the key in the ignition will drain the battery dead in just a few days. A FOAF tells me it's even true on his brand new Cayman.

POST 7Original post

I take it out and put it halfway back. No dead batteries.

+1 do it this way all the time for up to 2 weeks; no battery issue here.

POST 9Original post

Leaving the car unlocked will also increase the drain on the battery.

POST 10Original post

Why would you leave the key in the ignition in the first place? That's the first place a thief will look in your garage. Better to stick it under a mat if you must leave it in the car at all.

POST 11Original post

Can't quite imagine leaving the key in my Porsche, but maybe it's just me

POST 12Original post

Why will leaving the car unlocked drain the battery? I seldom lock my car as it's in the garage or at work most of the time. Never leave the key in it, though...

POST 13Original post

even heard the story about a guy's porsche and lexus got stolen when they leave the keys in the car? after u read that story, u may want to keep the key in the house.

I have not experienced this with my 99 996. Unlocked with no key and my battery is fine.

POST 15Original post

I've left my '03 unlocked with no key while I was out of town for two weeks. No problems when I got back. It started up nice and strong. I could argue that leaving it locked (with the motion sensor on) would drain the battery though.

POST 16Original post

Your battery will drain faster having the car locked than it will unlocked.

I'm calling BS on this one. Locking the car engages the alarm system, including interior movement sensors, and this gives increased current draw on the battery. Unlocked is better for your battery.

POST 18Original post

Agreed. I can't see how leaving the car unlocked drains battery. I 'can' see how leaving the ignition in the car without first pulling it out all the way and then reinserting 'does' drain the battery more quickly.

POST 19Original post

On a somewhat related note, I found out that if I close the car door, then pull the key out, then walk away without locking the car, all the interior lights will stay lit for over 2 hours. To make sure all the interior lights go out after a 30 second delay either remove the key before closing the car door, or lock the car as you walk away.

I leave the keys to all three cars in my garage in the center console so I don't have to wonder where I left them. I guess I'm not real worried that somebody is going to break into my house and steal my cars.
