I only found out when I researched the parts #s after the Midas guy pointed out that the brackets were slightly different. It's on my 40th Anniv. since Thursday, but I want to find out what, if any, issues there are with these mufflers before I go ballistic with the dealer. Does the 4/5" bypass tube versus 2" on the new version make any difference to performance or warranty? Does anyone know how the old PSE sounds compared to the new version? Any insight appreciated.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The smaller bypass on the Mk1 PSE was designed for the 3.4L engine, so I would think there is some reason they went to a different setup on the 3.6 and later versions. It probably will not hurt to have the 3.4 PSE but I would want it to be model year correct, especially on a X51 car. Are you saying you have both types of PSE on your car at ths time? If so, this is clearly contraindicated in the Porsche service manuals.
