Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Bought my ‘99 996 tip in mid-July at 87k km and it has been my daily since. It’s currently at 92k km. Had PPI and borescoping done prior to purchase at a local Porsche dealer and no issues were identified at the time. Slowly making my way down the list of To-Do’s, and one of them is getting a diagnosis of this slight ticking sound. I think it’s been there since my purchase. Most prominent on a cold start and seems to improve after warming up, but never fully goes away. Does this sound like sticky lifters to you guys? I’m not very mechanically inclined so learning as I go. From my online reading it doesn’t sound like piston slapping or bore scoring, there’s no smoke from the exhaust on start up, and no soot buildup on the exhaust either after putting on 5k km. First video is a cold start after the car sitting overnight in a parking lot. Second, third, and fourth videos are after a 15min drive. Also in the second half of the fourth video, there seems to be a sort of “metal gurgling” noise when the camera is right underneath the muffler - what might this be? You Tube You Tube You Tube You Tube Any help/insight would be appreciated. Thanks! Edited: to add 2 more videos You Tube You Tube

POST 2Original post

I don't hear anything. The vids are very/too short. Put the phone in a place where you think you hear something and leave it there for 20-30 seconds without moving it then post...

POST 3Original post

I agree with wildbilly32, longer clip in one place. The "gurgling" sound...I would check coolant level uneducated guess you have some air in there. But I think it could also be the serpentine belt. When was it last replaced? When was the water pump last replaced? The clicking sound...it's pretty faint, maybe the longer clip will help.

POST 4Original post

I don't hear anything concerning , but I see a concerning big crack in the third video. ( and yes the video's are too short)..

POST 5Original post

That crack in the muffler seam is the poor man's sport exhaust!

Thank you. I'll get a longer clip the next chance I get. The car is new to me with sparse previous records, and neither the belt nor the water pump's been replaced as far as I know. The muffler replacement is the next big thing on the list of To-Do's Right along with possibly the water pump..
