Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Insert key with 12v battery connected or not connected. Key will not turn. Move steering wheel left and right to release tension on lock. Key will not turn. Removed common failure electrical ignition switch. Key will not turn. Any insight? Does the 12v battery need to be connected to havethe switch to turn switch turn? It is the correct key. It works the door. The spare key will not turn it either. Thank you.

POST 2Original post

No, 12V or not the switch should turn. Are you sure you have the correct key? The ignition switch is a simple mechanical device. It should turn. However, without 12V so the immobilizer can read the key ignition via the ignition switch surround you might trip an alarm. If you don't supply 12V the immobilizer can't read the key and the car won't start. But the key still should turn. Did you try the key in the door? Does it lock/unlock the door?

POST 3Original post

The lock mechanism is broken. Somewhat common, there is a revised part from Porsche. The revised lock mechanism takes a different electrical switch. To get the broken mechanism out might be tough. The key needs to be turned to press the release button. It is possible to break off a cover on the side and unlock the mechanism. As I recall removing the instrument binnacle lets you access the one M8 bolt and unlocking button.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The key is correct. It works the door and the lockable console. I will had a silicone based lube and try again.

POST 5Original post

Not the keyhole. The big casting behind the dash that the electrical switch is attached to. part #20 in this diagram.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you for the information. I will be digging in to the lock mechanism today.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Update. I sprayed Strike Hold in ignition lock cylinder. Inserted paper clip for switch release. After some jingling, paper clip insert and reinsert the key will now turn as designed. There was some brown grease that came out with the paper clip. My guess it was gummed up and stuck. Thank you for the help.
