Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi My tacho drops out momentarily, usually when I go over 4k, then triggers the TC to turn off (see poor quality video attached). I'm thinking its not a cluster problem as that wouldn't trigger the TC fault, but maybe the ECU? Am I correct in thinking the signal comes from the crank sensor? Could it be this? I've already googled this one to death and couldn't find anything similar.....

POST 2Original post

Ignition lock, perhaps? Does ABS remain active in such cases? If yes, then not ignition lock. The tach blip and TC fault have most probably the same cause instead of the blip causing the TC Fault. HTH a little

Yes ABS is active, and yeah quite right the fault is from the same thing

POST 4Original post

I doubt its the crank position sensor because I think your engine would shut off if the signal was no longer detected. did you release the throttle pedal in the video, or the the car close the throttle body by itself? could you continue to drive through it? if you can reliably make the problem arise each time, you could datalog the RPM with a scan tool and see whether the computer is still reviving the signal.

Yes I released the throttle, the car drives fine just no tachometer reading. The problem occurs most of the time on an early morning short commute, less when warm but can still bring it on with higher revs

POST 6Original post

Okay, now Im firm in my belief that its not the crank sensor. I may be wrong, but I dont think so. Im guessing the problem lies with your instrument cluster or its wire harness. Bad ground, or intermittent short- or open- circuit. But its still a guess.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, so now I have checked - I have error codes P1340 and P1531 - so likely to be a problem with the vario cam actuator or solenoid which ties in with a rough idle and hunting on startup. Question is - does it relate to the tacho problem - dodgy wiring???
