Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had a bore scope done on a 2000 996 engine with about 60K miles. The photos (attached) shows squiggly lines on four of the six cylinder walls. There was no bore scoring seen on any cylinder and the compression leak-down showed no leakage. We assumed, therefore that these were not cracks. But what are they? Is this a cause for concern? Could it be a ticking time bomb? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Photo 1 Photo 2 Photo 3 Photo 4

POST 2Original post

They sure look like cracks... Hoping someone here with more expertise chimes in with good news for you!

POST 5Original post

Not cracks, just squigley lines and they r very normal. Your bores look great.

De Jeeper Do you know what causes these lines? Chuckben

No but i assume the plating process as they r in every motor u have seen pics of. Maybe @Charles Navarro can help?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I did get input from LN Engineering (Jud, Charles & Jake): This is a normal occurrence in these engines and is nothing to worry about.

POST 9Original post

Huh, I'd be very interested in knowing what causes them. My logic was that there's a crack in the surface lining, probably not through the whole cylinder wall - a shallow crack would allow for material to deposit in there (like a tattoo ), making it visible.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
