Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My Tiptronic shifter cap is popping off occassionally, I knew this was an issue with 99 and maybe 00 cars, but thought Porsche had offically fixed it for 01. Anyone have any suggestions, or should I just tell the dealer at the 1-year service in a few weeks? Thanks Mike 01 AS C4 8500mi

Hi Mike, I let my dealer know about any anomalus occurances with my car, even if it's a small little detail. They charge all warranty work and repairs to the factory and when enough of the same problem shows up, the factory makes changes. So I think it's good to communicate all the details. I've had a creaking noise at my back RHS back window that apparently is common enough for the factory to take note.

Mike, I've had the same problem with my 2000 C2. I was really disappointed to find that the "Aluminum" package I paid extra for is really just a piece of plastic painted the color of aluminum. I've just gotten used to it and am careful to keep my thumb over it to make sure it doesn't pop off.

Here's the fix. I've had this ongoing for nearly 3 years and at least two new shift caps. Next time it pops off, notice the spring that is located on the botton side facing the storage box of your rear console. Take that spring off - it comes off with gentle tugging. Pop the shifter cap right back on. That spring will have no effect on the operation (springiness) of the cap - that springiness comes from the button on the top of the shifter, not the spring. The spring is simply to put a bit of pressure on the cap so it is completely seated. You may notice is seems just a hair loose, but it won't pop off like it did with that spring. You can replace it (I did) but it will continue to happen unless you go springless.

A TSB came out for this old problem last year for both the Boxster and 996. It is TSB #6/00 dated 12/22/00. It says that a modified lever button and spring were installed starting on Sept 20, 2000, so your '01 should have it. Guess there is still a problem. For others, if you want to know if you have the modified button there is a number molded into the underside of the button. It should be 800 or higher. 8=month of August, 00=year.
