Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Good day All I try to find this answer but haven't found it yet. I got a opportunity to buy a 996 2001 with a bad engine (cylinder wall crack) and I do have acces to a Boxter engine 2007 with ECU. How easy or difficult will it be to incorporate in the 996? Specially with all the sensor and programmation. ill I need a PIWIS to program or durametric tool will work?

POST 2Original post

2007 Boxster 3-chain M97.20(2.7) or M97.21(3.4) with VariocamPlus is very different from the 996 M96.04 3.4 5-chain with Variocam. You would have to swap everything(including ECU & wiring) and then modify wiring harnesses to fit in the rear instead of where the back seat should be...NOT an easy job.

POST 3Original post

Nothing is the same between these two at an "easy" level. The car would be extremely under powered, and on top of that the variable valve timing systems are incompatible, which would be a wiring nightmare. You need an M96.01/02/04 engine for a direct swap to keep things simple without conversion complications and continual phantom issues.

POST 4Original post

The wiring harnesses are very very different due to different types of cam advance technologies, as well as physical differences in the intake systems design and height.. So unless you are very very good a wiring and fab, you are much better off to get a 996.1 engine .. a 986.1 engine will work also ( with much less work) but will have much less power...

POST 5Original post

Are there any boxster engines that would fit without wiring headaches? I understand there's some drilling and tapping for exhaust mounts, but as far as electronics go?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for your input. I will probably look at other option

5-chain 3.2 M96.21 (2000-2002 Boxster S) is a possibility. You might be able to put in an early 2.5 or 2.7, but it sure would be a dog. The Boxster is lighter than a 996.

Don't forget the Ecu and cluster need coded is you can get someone to do it.. Unless you bring the cluster with the old motor. I think there are LS swaps that would be easier,, sadly..
