Our family currently owns a 2000 996 C4, and one thing we've noticed is the rather clumsy size of the standard steering wheel. We also own a 2001 VW GTI, and we find the smaller wheel on that car much better suited to spirited driving. I'm just curious why the stock wheel on the 996 is so large (and so thinly padded), and whether the optional 3-spoke sports wheel is any better. I often find my leg rubbing against the wheel when I reach for the clutch. You guys think its worth getting a 3-spoke one fitted from the dealer? P.S. I've felt the M wheel on the current M3 and that's the feel I like. Is the Porsche 3-spoke anything like it?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My theory on the standard wheel is that they are again building the cars for the comfort group of people rather than the "driving enthusiasts". Here is the 3 spoke from my 99 996. Loren (99 996)
I upgraded my stock wheel to the three spoke and I'm glad I did. It's definitely thicker. I don't remember if it is any smaller in diameter or not. I think the two parts (rim and air bag module) cost about $750 and I did my own install. It wasn't too bad but you may not want to mess around with a loaded airbag. Karl
I've been thinking of upgrading to the 3-spoke wheel as well. How much will a dealer charge for the wheel installed? Do they give you anything for the old one?
The 3-spoke and the 4-spoke are the same diameter. I installed my own 3-spoke and it has a much better feel as the grip is thicker with thumb inserts. You can buy the parts from Suncoast and do it yourself, or I would think a dealer could do it and still keep the cost of the conversion under 1K for everything. I do not think there are many people that want the old 4-spoke so I doubt you can get a trade in.
I like my 4 spoke wheel. In fact I tried both before I ordered the car and I liked the 4 spoke better, 3 spoke seemed a little "boy racer" to me JMHO.
If it's the same diameter I won't bother. Thanks for the help guys. P.S. Loren, I love the red/grey interior. Awesome!
I prefer the 3 spoke in my 2001 996. I think it has a better "feel" to it when engaged in performance driving. The four spoke is too cluttered for my taste.
