Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Has anyone tried the chains (pictured) available from Porsche (99636192200)? Or any other chains for that matter? Chains are required at certain times in certain places in the mountains near here (Lake Tahoe). The 99636192200 chains look different than what I am used to with the plastic parts. Trying to figure out if they are worth getting or if just standard chains will do. This thread is a no "you are crazy to drive your Porsche in the snow" zone. TIA

If I didn't have snow tires I'd be looking into something called "Snow Socks". For an area like Tahoe it's perfect, i.e. no mixed conditions, the roads are usually snow covered above a certain elevation and not snow covered below that. I would not trust standard chains from a normal retailer. Did a lot of damage to a car once when a chain let go at 30mph.

I have a set of Autosock fabric based chain substitutes for my 2003 C4S. ( http://www.autosock.us/ ) They are required for our mountain passes in the Pacific Northwest. I have 285/35-18 winter tires on stock 11" rims. I put the socks on in the garage and they look OK but were difficult to get on because of the wide tires and tight clearances. I could do it in a pinch but it would be wet and nasty. My basic plan is to comply with the requirement but plan to park if conditions are so bad that chains are required for 4 wheel drive.

There are new "traction laws" in place in Colorado for passenger vehicles when driving over mountain passes. Cars must have one of three things: AWD with a minimum tread depth requirement, proper winter tires (with the snowflake on the mountain symbol), or snow chains. Driving back from Vail yesterday I saw quite a few vehicles equipped with the new snow chains like the Porsche chains. That seems to be the popular style now.

^ How many ski days for you this season Dennis?(I'm at 7 mid-week days)

POST 6Original post

No need for chains here, but in any event this is a good watch - http://www.foxsports.com/motor/story...i-slope-011516

Only 5 so far! I've been busy with work. I've got lots planned later this month. On the bright side, I was lucky enough to participate in the "Fresh Tracks" program at Vail on Saturday. I was on the first chair up the hill at 7:30 AM. I got up there to find 18" of fresh powder. It was incredible, and one of the best ski days that I've had in a long time. We had 15" the next day. I've got trips to Steamboat Springs, Snowmass, Vail, and Beaver Creek planned in the next 30 days. I'll get in a few days at Keystone and A-Basin in-between those trips.

I envy you guys. I had to put this ski season "on ice" as I recover from a torn PCL in my knee. Of course Tahoe just was dumped on. We don't really get powder out here. Mainly "Sierra Cement". Always loved that Denver is so close to amazing skiing.

Torn PCL? Ouch! How did you do that? Did you have it reconstructed?

The 'ol dashboard injury. People used to tear PCLs all the time from slamming their shins into dashboards during front end collisions. I tore my playing baseball and slamming my shin. Still have no PCL on left, but there's hope, I can push the clutch just fine!

Motorcycle accident 5 months ago. A pickup did its best to t-bone me. I avoided the truck but went down. The tear was level 2 so the surgeon suggested rehab rather than surgery.

I suppose it could have been much worse. Good luck with your rehab!

I was unsure that I would be on skis again this year after severing my Achilles T last Feb. 27th. I was tentative the first day, but feel better after a few days of skiing this year. I was non weight bearing on crutches for 10 weeks. Hope to ski at least 25 days this year.

Fresh tracks at Vail must have been quite an experience. Our family skied at Vail years ago with 2 other families. I am in awe of the ski trips you have planned Dennis. One of my sons left for Utah yesterday.

Ouch, looks painful! Luckily my PCL was not severed and was on crutches for only 4 weeks or so. Since then I've been doing a LOT of balance and strength work on my legs. On the plus side, legs are stronger than they have ever been.

I think I had my 2000 C4 out in the snow once.......... It snowed and I didn't expect it to. I had to turn off PSM to have a little fun in the parking lot....... otherwise she wouldn't let me get "out of shape". I have not driven my P cars in the winter since I owned my first one in 1992. Not gonna start now.

POST 18Original post

I tried several brands of chains and either they failed or were too difficult to install with limited clearance and very cold temps. I now carry the auto sock (and blizzak tires).
