Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Trying to troubleshoot a noise im getting from my 1999 996 C2, 115,000 km. The noise can be described as a howl, that is completely dependent on vehicle speed, and only occurs when the transmission is in any gear with the clutch engaged, when there is no throttle (eg. Engine braking). My first thought was probably pinion bearings, but it seems most people were only getting the noise when throttle was applied, where my noise goes away when I apply throttle. I appreciate any help.

POST 2Original post

It sure sounds like something to do with a gear mesh or wear issue in your transmission.

POST 3Original post

still suspect pinion bearing - if it is the case it will get progressively louder I struggled to locate a canadian shop who would take it on for me - in the end, I shipped my trans south of the border. My feeling was that I'd rather have mine gone through than take a chance on a used unit. Best of luck,

Under what conditions - cold/hot, intermittent or all the time, all gears?

All the time, in any gear, and if anything it could be a little bit better when the car is warmed up.

Op did u get this figured out? could be power steering pump? power steering pump makes a whining noise when going out.
