Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ho hum, this 1999 996 of mine just did this today. Started the car, heard a very crisp "tick"-ing sound from the engine compartment. Came from the right bank. Popped lid, played with the throttle, got down on all 4's (well, 3's because one hand was on the throttle), noticed it coming from one of the cylinders. Sounded like someone had unplugged one of the spark plugs and was letting it spark in the air. Either that or it sounded like a very crisp valve noise. No miss fire, no rough idling. Interestingly, after the engine got hot (185-190), the noise went away. Was this a sticky valve? 18,000 miles, never downshifted accidentally from 5th to second while going at 120 mph at DE, so I guess a twisted valve is not it.

POST 2Original post

Sound more like a sticking hydraulic lifter but I can't be sure. If it persists, take the car in.
