Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Any special instructions on front crank seal install? I see that the depth of the RMS should be 13mm, but what is it for FMS? Should it be flush?

POST 2Original post

About all I can offer is general advice: Seal should be pushed in evenly and it is best if the new seal is not positioned exactly where the old seal was. This is to prevent the new seal's sealing lip from residing exactly where the old seal's sealing lip resided. The old seal probably wore a shallow groove in the crankshaft's journal and if the new seal ends up in this groove it can leak, will leak, and soon after installation.

POST 3Original post

It's 13mm from the face of the crankshaft where the flywheel mates to the crank.

POST 4Original post

First time I have seen the new "clear" seal. Interesting that the top crankcase lips don't appear to line up.

POST 5Original post

Ya, clear seal not recomended, stick with Porsche OEM. I noticed that they don't line up when i got the old one out, but wasn't causing me problems, the old one was not leaking when i took it out.

Thanks but what about the pulley side.

POST 8Original post

Install it 1mm inset. There is no Porsche spec or tool for this. We made our own tools and thats my spec.

POST 9Original post

Thanks for sharing Jake. That is a good example of a spec we need but Porsche will not provide - go figure !Really ,what would it 'cost' them to offer that tid-bit to the DIY Porsche enthusiast ?Hopefully someone in Stuttgart write Jake a Thank you ?

No sweat... I could share a whole lot more if you guys could help me police the damn copy cats!!

POST 12Original post

Police the copy cats? It is more like Keystone Cops - the copy 'artists' attempts with products like cylindrical roller bearings and drilling out crankcases are hilarious ! And note most other vendors do not respond to legitimate questions about their new products. FVD was the only one I recall even trying to respond.
