Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The headliner on the inner side of the folding top of my 2000 996 Cabriolet is sagging/coming apart from the outer part of the convertible top. This is only occurring on the sides of the cabin near where the top meets the side windows... no sagging issues in the middle of the roof, near the windshield, or near the rear plastic window. Im not sure whether the repair for this is simply gluing the inner headliner back against the outer piece, or if there are cables/clips that need to be adjusted. I am 40 miles away from the car otherwise I would take a pic (hopefully will be able to get a pic of the issue this weekend). My question is -- where should i take the car to get this fixed? I spoke to the expert local Porsche shop but they specialize in mechanical work, not cosmetic issues with convertible tops so they really couldn't offer any advice. Are there any Porsche convertible top experts in the New York metro area? I found a place that is close and says they fix convertible tops - is it safe to have work done at a generic convertible top place like this? - http://superiorautorestyling.com/

An upholstery shop that specializes in convertible tops will be able to take care of the problem. In the worst case, you need a new headliner. In the best, strap(s) or tabs need to be re-glued or sewed. I think the sagging headliner (at the sides) is somewhat common. The sides of my headliner sagged a bit before I had the convertible top replaced. The upholstery shop was able to reuse the headliner and reinstalled it with the new top.

Get the top into service mode position and release the bobble cables and lift the rear of the top so you can examine it closely. I think there is a strengthener of some kind which goes across the top at this point. I think it could be a wire. If that has stretched or even snapped, it could be replaced. Hey I don't really know but coming up with suggestions for you. You maybe able to see more clearly what needs to be done when the top is in service position. Don't forget to put the bobbles back before operating the top again. Good luck.
