Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just from a future value standpoint which car would you rather have in 10yrs/20yrs/ and longer? Understand this is crystal ball post but just curious as to your opinion. same condition, color, mileage, entry cost, etc...which would you buy today without regard to drive-ability, fun factor, mnx, etc... Basically which will possible out soar the other? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Well, KEL-J, unlike your 928, most people will scoff at the collector value of pretty much any 996. So, if you are buying a 996 as an investment, you are probably going to be disappointed. That being said, those two cars would probably be the best bets. The 40th AE guys are a pretty territorial group - they defend the uniqueness of their cars to the death. As for the 996TT, the general consensus on the X50 option is "Meh." The theory is that with the 996TT, the smaller turbos (K16) on the regular models will provide more usable (less turbo lag) power after an ECU tune, plus the ECU tune will yield more HP gain than the X50 turbos (K24). So, the difference between an X50 and a non-X50 turbo isn't really that big of a deal. So, if you are dead set on investment value in the selection of a 996, I'd have to go with the 40th AE.

POST 3Original post

Any estimation as to how many X50 Turbo's were made, obviously 1,963 AE's were made

POST 5Original post

Not sure on exact x50 numbers as it was an option so I would try digging around the pca registry site. Kind of like asking how many had graphite grey int, or supple leather options.

POST 6Original post

I think the 996 GT3 or GT2 will be the collectible ones.

I like the logic especially since there are far fewer 40th AE cars out there. Although this is the case, the only thing "special" about the 40th AE is the X51 345 hp engine. The 40th AE doesn't even have the "wide" body. The other items about it are cosmetic (except for the luggage which tends to get "lost" and not sold with the car). Having said that, many people would prefer owning a "turbo" rather than a "regular" 911, as special as the AE may be. The Turbo also has the wider body. The fact that it's an X50 is irrelevant to me and not that many people know about it. So to me, the turbo wins out even though there are a lot more of them out there.

POST 8Original post

The 996 GT3 and GT2 are already going up rather quickly. Turbo prices seem to be on the move up as well, but not as fast as the former 2. As for the Carreras, the MK1 in particular seem to be lower every time I look... So much so that, I start thinking about buying another one, GREAT cars!

I would go for an X50 over a 40th. Historically, look at the values of turbo 911's vs. non-turbo. While the 996 will likely never reach the aircooled values, it will likely follow their pricing scales with the turbo's being more sought after. This. If you really want to make $$ off a 996, it's gotta be one of the GT cars.
