Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I went to my daughter's high school, parked next to an old Cayman, I thought it looked very odd. It was white, had pumpkin tail lights and side markers, I walked around the front and it had 996.1 headlights, looked inside and it had the interior of a 996/986, had the horse shoe and single DIN radio, the horseshoe had the switches on an angle like the early 986's. I looked the Cayman's up on line and did not find one case of them having the 996.1 headlights. They all have 997 style headlights. What the heck was I looking at? It had no badging and was white. Was a relatively ugly car. Wish I would of taken a picture now!

POST 2Original post

You saw the "red headed bastard" stepchild of a 996 and a 986...

POST 4Original post

Are you sure it wasn't a Boxster with the hard top installed? The Cayman never had 997 style headlights. They have always been different.

Probably something like this.....looked at the interior, was definitely a boxster now that I look at Cayman's online. Did not notice the side vents.....but the wife wanted to move towards the High School.... It was odd, very odd indeed. Now that I think about it, it had 986.1 boxster tail lights.

yeah for sure a 986 with the hardtop. I actually quite like the lines from the side with the hardtop (after market); but the front just doesn't flow as well as the actual Caymans. It could just be that if they made it with the 986's I'd like it, but since we got a Cayman later that was IMO one of the prettiest cars on the new market, at the time. Still like the new ones, but the first gen and .2 gen's are amazing looking.
