Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

First one to respond gets a like and quote lol anyway - same as the SAI sound, occurs during cold startup but is coming seemingly from behind the dash/front drivers side, almost behind the ignition key. it sounds like an animal or something but sound is consistent and happening on cold startups when car has been standing all night. Startup Sound Pt II

POST 2Original post

Patrick, I had a similar sound coming from my motorsports aos as it was failing a month or two ago. However, it was a continuous squeal that came from the engine bay on the driver's side. Seems yours is coming from the dash so it may not be helpful.

it sometimes does the sound twice in immediate succession to the first one! It is indeed coming from dash/front right area. I am thinking maybe power steering, AC related or worst case even brake related. I think it sounds a bit like some type of pump - not sure what pumps are in that area behind the dash

POST 4Original post

May be a leak in the brake booster seal. Only thing i can think of. Would not be ps as that pump is in the back.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Funny enough it sounds almost like a space invaders type game sound...

POST 6Original post

Have u looked for a hidden hard wired radar detector? Maybe its turning on but is dead or dieing?

I haven't looked that up but I think you might be onto something. After you suggested this, I did some research online and found very few other threads of Porsche owners (996 and otherwise) that had similar issues. Unfortunately, none of the threads has the OP concluding with what the cause was, just a bunch of speculation. My main reason for believing in your idea of it being some kind of box or monitor in the dash area is that the noise went from occurring once during cold start, to occurring twice a day later to occurring three times another day later. And every time it sounds like space invaders, very analogous-electrical sound in nature - I doubt at this point this is seal or pump related! I am sure I will find out what it is and will post the answer here in this thread for future reference.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
