@Porschetech3 I was reading your thoughts on the exchanger sitting on bank two and had some questions that I'm sure you will have an idea of the answer. The oil flows into the exchanger from the filter correct? What is the path of the coolant from the pump to the exchanger? Is it passing around the bank 2 cylinders? What do you think the coolant temperature is entering and exiting the exchanger. I would guess the oil is entering at around what I am measuring at the filter right? I can measure oil at the filter and the factory sensor. Coolant at the factory. I consistantly see 30-35 degree difference in the coolant and oil filter temp. Around 15 degrees hotter at the factory oil sensor.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Yes, Oils flows from the Sump up to the oil pump, then from the oil pump into a big channel to the oil filter, out of the oil filter it goes straight up into the oil cooler/heat exchanger, then from the oil cooler/heat exchanger down to the crankshaft oil galley...from the crankshaft oil galley a path up to bank 2 head goes up with a head bolt hole.....To bank 1 head the oil flows through the crankshaft carroer then out through a head bolt hole to bank 1 head.. The oil pressure going into the oil filter and the pressure at the bank 1 head port can vary from ~1 bar to ~ 3 bar "less" ....depending on the oil temperature/viscosity...I have pressure sensors on my 3.4 996 at the oil filter and one at bank 1 head port on cold start/drive I can see 115 psi at oil filter and 70psi at the bank 1 head port, then at hot idle see ~ 22 psi at bank 1 head port and ~ 32psi at the oil filter.. Below is a coolant diagram I snagged from a Video from my friend Aaron that show the flow on a Boxster which is the same as M96 911... From #1 Water Pump is pumped into the block on Bank 1 side and has a big crossover to bank 2 through the bottom of the Sump. Then coolant flows underneath the cylinders starting with Cylinders #1and #4 , then to #2 and #5 , then to #3 and #6, then to oil cooler/heat exchanger....( #6 in the diagragm). The coolant that flows underneath the cylinders then flows up through each cylinder and through oil cooler/heat exchanger. and into the heads at each cylinder..Then is collected in a big channel above cylinders and is carried forward to the front of the engine to the coolant console where the temp sensor is .. Note : when the engine is cold/thermostat closed, there is a "short loop" channel coolant console that sends coolant back to the water pump to be pumped back through the engine for fast warm up ( no coolant is pumped to the radiators) ...as the thermostat opens the "long loop" to the radiators, it simultaneously closes the "short loop" of the engine so that ALL the coolant leaving the engine goes through the radiators for cooling...
So by the time the coolant gets to the exchanger what do you think the temperature could be? Or does the exchanger not drop coolant into the cylinders or the head? Trying to understand how much heat is being exchanged. Wouldn't a larger exchanger increase the coolant temperature exiting more than a smaller one?
Heat always seeks something cooler to transfer to,thats just how heat rolls... For a more Scientific/Technical explanation , The first law of thermodynamics is a formulation of the law of conservation of energy ....Which states :: Energy can neither be created nor destroyed; rather, it can only be transformed or transferred from one form to another. So basically the Heat Energy that is released from the Fuel ( BTU's) is transformed into Mechanical Energy ie. Work/Power to drive the wheels and the wasted Energy in the form of Heat Energy produced in the Combustion Chamber is transferred to Piston, head, and cylinder walls, then is transferred to coolant and oil..then is transferred to "AIR" ... During engine warm up more of the heat is transferred to the coolant, so the coolant is hotter and transfers heat to the oil via the Heat Exchanger essentially warming the oil But as the internal friction from sliding cams, gears, rotating crank ,sliding pistons, the oil will have more Heat than the coolant and the oil will be transferring heat to the coolant via the Heat Exchanger...essentially warming the coolant... This wasted Heat Energy is finally transferred to the "Ambient Air" ... On my car I have 6 oil Sensors ( 3 pressure and 3 Temp ) and 1 Coolant Temp ( factory) that is the "average temp" of the coolant coming from the engine.. My 3 Oil Temps Sensors are the Factory ( deep in the Sump and is the highest temp) and one in the UIDS ( the UIDS is finned so it is cooling the oil ) and one at the oil filter...( this one reads hotter than the one in the UIDS) ...I don't have one "After" the Heat Exchanger so I won't guess at the Temp drop.. At full Operating Temps/High Temps, yes a bigger Heat Exchanger will transfer more Heat from the Oil to the Coolant ..( that is its main purpose) Yes the Bank 2 side of the M96 runs hotter for several reasons.....
