Thinking about picking up a local '00 project that needs an engine and was wondering about 3.4 engine differences between 99 and 01. I see them listed for sale in various places simply as '99-'01 engine for sale but I know some differences exist but not sure on the year breakdown. Like some have E-Gas, some have two fuel lines, some have a returnless fuel system, etc. So will any year engine fit into any body as long as you modify it to that year, or are they year specific for certain things? TIA.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The cars can be outfitted with an M96.01, M96.02, or M96.04 The differences between these are all in the engine wire harness, and can be interchanged between years with the proper wire harness, throttle body and etc.
Consult "996 The Essential Companion" it goes into great deal on all the changes and the dates they became effective...both in USA and RofW.
Thanks guys.. Aside from the electronics, wouldn't a early engine have to switch out fuel rails, etc to make it work in a newer body because of the single fuel line?
