I took off my front bumper to refinish and repaint it. When I went to put it back on, probably 3.5 hours ago at this point, I noticed the attached loop was hanging free so I must have inadvertently disconnected it when I took the bumper off. I bumper is already off, and I've taken out the passenger headlight, the passenger side wheel arch trim and removed the front tire. I've looked all over the place with a boroscope and stuck my head in the arch and CANNOT find what the heck it attaches to. Part of the problem is that I don't know what exactly I'm looking for. Can someone have mercy and tell me where this stupid thing attaches and what it looks like so I can go back to the future and put the bumper on? A picture and some general idea of the location would be ideal. I'm not seeing a wire or anything similar coming from the cabin but I've never had an issue with the hood release before so it should be there somewhere . I have the car jacked up now and would like to finish this today if possible (Nov. 10th). Many thanks in advance; I'm going back out there and continue to pound my head against the wall. Alan

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It attaches to the front hood latch. It is called the emergency release cable.
Thanks, I just figured that out (D'oh!). My car is an early 996 and the interior hood release is manual, so it never occurred to me that it would have an emergency release cable. I thought that was only for cars with the electronic releases. I guess if the original snaps you could use it.
