Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Didn't know what to do with my old silver hard top. The shops wanted as grand to paint it black so I decided to have some fun instead. I wrapped it with carbon fiber. I've posted a pic to show the results. I think it looks pretty darn good. I'd be interested in seeing what others have done with wraps and or plasti coat to dress up their rides.

POST 3Original post

Almost looks like the convertible top at a distance. Did you wrap it yourself or have someone do it for you?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had a tint shop in town do the work. I paid $400 for the top and $500 for the wrap. In Rochester NY the top will be nice in the winter months. Cheaper than the $1500-$2000 for a new top.

POST 5Original post

I actually think that looks very good. A whole lot better than a grand for a spray job.

POST 6Original post

Looks good. A friend plasti-dipped the hard top for his Boxster and it came out great for a very low cost.

++1 I have played with the idea of "plastidipping" my hardtop.... Due to all the road rash (my car is black) I have even played with the idea of "plastidipping" a "bra" in the front...

POST 9Original post

Interesting idea. I think it looks good. Can you post a close-up photo?

POST 11Original post

It kinda looks like the new 991's convertible top since it's flat black and doesn't show the ribs. Can I get witness? ha!

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here are a couple of close up pictures. I used the in-house brand of wrap. 3M had some slightly shinier stuff but it was ~$200 more.

POST 13Original post

Mrs. Schnell refers to stick-on CF wrap as "carbon fiber suck" - and I'm inclined to agree for the most part, but in this case, the matte wrap on the black car does mimic the appearance of the cabrio top. Pretty cool. The shop did a nice job with the edges - the vinyl can be a pain when you're working around corners and joints. The direction of the "weave" on the channel next to the center roof panel isn't quite right, but only tools like me notice stuff like that.

POST 14Original post

There's a guy in North San Diego County that put the CF wrap over his entire car (interior too). Looks like crap. This roof-only install looks pretty decent. In general, though, when I see CF weave I hope to see real CF.

POST 15Original post

Some jackhole down here has a chromed Mercedes. It looks ridiculous.

POST 16Original post

Sorry, looks like a toupee to me. But that's just my opinion.

POST 17Original post

Very nice looking. The channels next to the center panel look great with their contrasting pattern.

POST 18Original post

Hmm, not a bad idea and it looks as good as any hardtop ever could. Have to admit that I do love mine for winters here on the Wet Coast. Feels like a completely different, much quieter car. I have a hardtop that matches my midnight blue/savannah beige combo but it has a number of big scratches that are well beyond buffing out.
