If your fuel door lock doesn't seem to catch and keep the fuel door locked, the fix could be very simple and inexpensive. There is supposed to be a rubber grommet that guide the plastic locking pin into its "catch" on the fuel door itself. Apparently, these were originally rubber on many 996 cars and they tend to disintegrate over the years. When they disintegrate, the pin is no longer aligned and often "misses" its catch point. A new version of the grommet made out of plastic was created for the 997. It is a 30 second fix and the part is about $2, not including shipping. Keep it in mind to add to another order of parts to avoid the insane base shipping costs most places charge. The third picture below shows the part number. Here is the part: Here is the part being slid on to the locking pin shaft: Here is the part number:

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I noticed my sister-in-law was missing hers and now I know why. Great tip.
Appreciate this, mine just failed last month. Will order from my local Classic center.
FWIW, I looked on the Porsche Atlanta Perimeter online parts site and they wanted something like $2.16 plus $14.95 shipping if you ordered through the website. I called their parts department through the main stealership phone number and the guy at the parts counter said it would be just under $24.00 plus tax. {rolls eyes}
