Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Nope, the transmission can be removed without the need to do anything to the starter. Also, the pressure plate, clutch, and flywheel can be removed without the need to dismount the starter, but it's a good idea to replace it during clutch service if you believe it may be failing.
Well, it depends on what transmission. If you have a Tipt (which is a transmission) then ... hell yes the starter has to be removed. But if you had a Tipt, then you actually have to remove the whole engine-transmission as a unit.

Good point! I think Rennlist should make it a requirement that a person must list the specifics of the car in question before starting a new thread.
If you have a manual Turbo the starter also has to be removed to get the trans out. Which is a piece of cake on the G50 transmission, 20 minutes tops.

If you get stuck, there are a couple of shops I can recommend in Miami.
That is an easy ... easier job than a tiptronic. Good luck.

I saw a video of a shop doing inspection R&R for IMS on a Tip 996. The car is on a lift, engine still in car, and transmission out on the floor. I think it was Charlies Shop or some name sort of like that or similar. How did they do this without taking out engine/transmission as a unit? Anyone? YMMV
I think it depends on whether it's a Aisin tipt or a Mercedes Tipt. Really, if it were I, I would just remove the whole thing engine and all, and then do a bunch of service on the engine.

Mercedes 722.6 2004 C4S. Does that make a difference? I was thinking of more "simple" way to get at the IMS w/o eng/trans drop. I was just thinking that R&R engine/trans is a lot of extra work to do some tasks. R&R eng/trans 8 hours? Maybe lower engine/trans a little , but not "Out" to do something like UAOS or something. I could drop an aircooled engine/trans in ~45 mins by myself, no lift, etc. Everyone goes off on the WYIT rabbit hole, but I just want to do a few things for now. No local indies, none even close, so I try other ideas. Pdealer wants $120+ for m.y.2000 dipstick, not going there. Sticker shock doesn't even cover my reaction. Ridiculous. I did make a low special shape dolly that would allow a jack in the middle, yet had "ears" to make it wider to support everything. It was pretty neat, worked just great. I don't know if I could "mod it" to make it work for 996 engine/trans. Just thoughts.
If you have the Mercedes tipt, you have to take the engine-gearbox out as a unit.
