Pretty sure OP was talking about a compass intregated into the rear view mirror which became popular around the launch of the 996.

I believe if your car is equipped with the PCM unit with SatNav then you have a compass integrated with the navigation system. Otherwise I can't find anything in any of my guide books that mention an optional compass.

I have conflicting info on it but an Audi compass/self-dimming mirror is plug & play in a 996. There is some info about in this thread .

Thanks for the link; very interesting write-up. Hard to believe the 996 was not offered with a mirror compass from Porsche. I have rain sensing wipers and the amber 'mood lighting' led built into the base so not sure the Audi mirror would work in my 996.

I added an aftermarket rear view mirror to my 996. Mine had auto-dimming and Homelink. There are also mirrors with a compass available.

my favorite 996 feature is that the mirror is just that- a mirror no auto dim (to leak and break) no led light for the alarm (to fall off) no rain sensing wiper sensor (to delaminate from the windshield and stop workign)
