I am thinking of picking up a 996, and am wondering what the general impression of a low mileage car would be? I am concerned that the engine may be a bad one, and the car is WAY out of warranty. Is there a way to CPO an old car?

The Porsche CPO Warranty Brochure states... "Vehicles can be covered up to 6 years from original date of sale or 100,000 miles/160,000 kilometers, whichever comes first." Here's a link on their website...you can download the brochure from there. http://www.porsche.com/usa/pre-owned-vehicles/approved/ You could look into a third party warranty. Regardless, I would have a PPI done.
I understand the "new" CPO is the same as factory warranty....

January of this year I bought a CPO 2001 with 12,500 miles. I drive it everyday. It's at 23,000 miles with no worries. If you buy an ultra low mileage car make sure its been maintained properly while its been sitting around and get the CPO warranty...that means the previous owner most likely traded it in on another Porsche...and that means he probably took care of it.

Thinking about selling mine again. I love it........ Just thinking. I keep longing to trick out a turbo. I need to buy my rennlist prior though..... IMO, the 99 is the best year, lightest, no egas, etc.

You can buy an aftermarket warranty. My guess is for full "motor coverage" it would cost you about $4K. Not sure what a used or new motor (3.4) runs these days. Or, you could "invest" the $4k spent on the warranty and "self insure"
Myself and others are selling early 996's with motor warranty's from replacement motors. Right now that's the best economical value because the warranty is built into the sale price and not extra. Depends on if you want the chassis to be low-mileage like the engine too.
I bought mine about a year ago with 21,400 miles. I purchased it directly from a Porsche dealer that had originally sold the car and they also serviced the car through the years. Also, they gave me the complete service printout. I purchased a 2 year warranty from them too. It has been great, and I think that as long as someone drives the car at least 2500 miles a year you are OK. I put about 6000 miles this year on it using it as my daily commuter on sunny days. The only I needed to do was to do the 30,000 mile tune-up earlier.
These cars are designed to be driven....not to sit in garages...in my opinion, that is what causes a lot of the problems for these cars. YMMV
