In searching around I see tons of threads on replacing it but I don't see a thorough explanation, diagram or video on how the AOS actually works. I have seen mentions of affects on mixture, coolant loop, crankcase pressure, etc all of which peak my interest... Seems like an awful lot more than just a PCV device. Can someone humor me here?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

In the simplest terms it recycles the crankcase fumes through the intake system rather than venting to the atmosphere thereby lowering emissions and reducing pollution. All modern cars have a similar system in theory. The air/oil separator is just that - the crankcase fumes are oil laden and it separates the air and oil mix by swirling the mix around in the AOS, like a swirl pot, returning the oil to the crankcase sump. The heat from the coolant in the AOS mainly helps the system work more effectively particularly in colder climates.
