Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Driving home from work yesterday and noticed white smoke in my rear view mirror. Luckily i was a few stop signs from my house. Pulled in my drive way and turned the car off. I looked in the engine bay and noticed oil splattered every where. I looked under the car and found the worst of the worst!! A big oil leek. A pretty consistant flow. Man im so bumbed out! Can anyone help before taking the car to porsche and getting raped!!!!!!!

POST 2Original post

Ouch. =( I had my RMS fail a month ago, out of warranty, no service contract, major oil leak (puddle in the garage, drip per hour after driving to work, complete failure by the time I got it to the mechanic a couple hours later). I went to a good independent, and the repair was about $950, including parts, labor, and the oil change. Hopefully it is something on the order of this for you, not bigger! For comparison, the Porsche dealer quoted me $1200 for an RMS repair, which was not outrageously higher than the independent mechanic. Whatever the mechanic tells you, post it here, this community is great for calling BS when something smells funny.

POST 3Original post

You need to indentify the source of the leak before we can give any advice...

lol CaliColin thanks for the support!!

Ill try to post some pics....

POST 8Original post

Sounds like the oil seperator. I'd almost bet my paycheck on that. Looking at the age of your car that sounds like the appropiate guess. The only thing that might keep this from being the oil seperator is the smoke. That isn't a good thing.

POST 9Original post

Oil cooler possible? Definitely need some pictures and under-car observations, like where is it dripping from, esp. which side.

POST 10Original post

Dell, but would you bet your wife's paycheck on it? Nah, I didn't think so!

POST 12Original post

Good morning, Dell! Are you on your second "cup 'o Joe" yet?

POST 13Original post

Actually just poured it right now into my travel mug. Time to head to campus.

POST 14Original post

oil seperators smoke like a **** whjen then go

POST 15Original post

Good clarification Brad. I initially interpreted that as smoke form the exhaust pipes. But now that I think about it, oil all over the place would lead to smoke out the back. I think I had visions of what the F1 cars look like when the motor goes......POOF! Smoke pouring out the back. Seems that with the seperator, this smoke is understood and not nearly as bad. Just a byproduct of spraying.

POST 16Original post

I think he meant the onion like vegatble. Very nice mild onion flavor. Either way it's a bummer.

POST 17Original post

Actually when an F1 engine lets go most of that is not "smoke", it is "steam" from the coolant as it makes contact with the glowing exhaust and other engine components. Either way, it is definitely spectacular.

POST 18Original post

Very true. It is spectacular. Most is steam but there is a host of other stuff that just "let go". I see that and all I can think is....."what the hell is that gonnna cost to fix"

POST 19Original post

I think the correct term for this anomaly is KA-BLAMMO

POST 20Original post

No kiddin'......I think yours is probably more appropriate. I think my POOF is the appetizer before the KA-BLAMMO

POST 21Original post

actualy they smoke out the tail pipe, its simialr to pouring oil in the throttle body. we have to tow them into the shop fix them and tow them out of the shop so as not to smoke out the 300000 sq ft shop

POST 22 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the info.. How much am i looking at if it is the oil spererator?

POST 23Original post

Is your car a tip? - I think it's engine out for a tip... I've seen $500 quoted for non-Tip 996 My 986 was around that $$$ as well, but easier to get to via the engine hatch. Cavitation in the oil is a possible negative from leaving this un-fixed - apart from the oil spewing everywhere of course!!!!

POST 24Original post

Oh it is not too bad... their dealer just replaces it with a "remanufactured" engine!

POST 25Original post

Not much at all. It is just a PITA to get to since it is at a place on the engine as far forward as you can go on the top side. Serious PITA. I had mine done and it was $105 for the seperator and 1 hour of labor at $85. This was done at my Porsche indy back in Vegas. They are awesome!
