Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Are there any books comparable to Adrian Streather's "Porsche 993,The Essential Companion" for the 996? A real book, not a coffee table type. I appreciate your replies. Duke

POST 2Original post

It's being written. Hopefully I might be finished by the end of 2007. Ciao, Adrian.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Adrian: As you probably know, your "Essential Companion" is in a class by itself. I will certainly be one of the first to buy it. In the meantime, what can a guy who has just bought a 2002 996 do to really get familiar with his new honey? I know it sounds gratutitous, but your 993 book is a treasure. And the two cars seem to be so different from each other from the water cooled engine to the body and electrics. Seems servicing,by an amateur,is almost precluded. Any help or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated! Mike

POST 4Original post

Mike, My first advice would be to get out the owners manual and walk around the 996 and familiarise yourself with the car. There is lots in the manual to keep yourself busy with for quite a while. I actually disagree about your idea of servicing the 996 is difficult. I have done more work myself on my 996 than I was able to with my 964 due to my limited facilities. I actually prefer the 996 to work on than the 993 and 964. I find it comes apart much easier and much smaller bits are replaceable instead of the whole assembly plus of course the parts are cheaper. I don't see much real different under the covers between a 993 and a 996. All the basic principles are the same except for the engine cooling. The installation of the fuse and relay panel back inside the car was the right move as well. As more 996s get into the hands of the DIY home mechanics more helpful stuff will emerge. Many 996s are still under warranty. When the warranties run out the fun begins. Ciao, Adrian.
