Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have been casually lookingffor a 996, in the 00-02 range. This brings the question Factory warrenty (02) vs After Market warrenty (O1) vs Saving some bucks (00) and taking a chance. If you go with the third choice the worst case is probably to blow the engine. If you had to replace the engine, local P-car shop not the dealership, what would you be looking at?

POST 2Original post

I seen it posted some where on the board 12,000 dollars I think

POST 3Original post

Kind of matters where you are and how much an indi mechanic likes you. I think the engine itself is somewhere around $6000-$7000. If Bob ever shows up again you can ask him or do a search for his s/n "bobporsche" I think, you will find out all kinds of interesting engine blowing up stuff. IMO I would go with the 02 if you can.

POST 4Original post

New engine is def. worst case... But the 00 will prob. nickle and dime you before needing a new engine. Things like RMS, new expansion tank, etc. My father just picked up an 00 he got such a great deal that it made sense to buy the $3K 3yr/100K mi warranty he will keep the car for the three years if that. He was out the door with a highly optioned car with warranty for under $40K. If your concerned about big ticket items breaking the peice of mind may be worth it to you in the long run.

POST 5Original post

worst case would be new tranny and engine. Porsche doesn't offer rebuild parts for 6 spd tranny and it's a somewhat common failure. personally, i'd spend more money and get 02 or 03 that has factory warranty or is CPO. you get a bigger engine and many exterior, interior, performance improvements. if you are really tight on budget, i don't recommned buying a 911 without a warranty unless you are handy. these cars are very expensive to fix and i have yet to find a used car that is "perfect".

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks a lot guys. I'm not too worried about tranny as I need a tip. And the I work mostly under the theory the the nickle and dime stuff under warranty wouldn't be covered much anyway. If the 00 were to blow up on the way home from buying it 12K doesn't seem too bad; at about 5k dereciation per year 02,01,00. Thanks again.

Really? And you data source to back that up is????? Oh yeah, I forgot, you subscribe to the BobPorsche school of inferential statistics. j/k, couldn't reist. In all seriousness though...NOBODY knows the prevalance of that statement regarding engine or tranny failures. So please let's stop proliferating false (or unknown) claims.
