Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am looking at pre-owned 996s and I have a question re the PPI procedure. If this has been posted before please link me (I did search) so I don't waste your time. The car(s) I am looking at are at a specialty dealer (not a Porsche dealer). I know these guys from the experiences others have had with them (which has been very good). They do their own inspection but , from reading on these boards for awhile, experienced owners seem to suggest getting a PPI by a Porsche mechanic which I think makes infinite sense. How exactly is this done? Does a mechanic come to the dealer to do the inspection or do you take the car to the mechanic's shop? Does the mechanic need to come from a Porsche dealer or could he/she be from a private shop specializing in Porsches? These questions must seem so prosaic but as a first time buyer I want to do this right. BTW outside of Ferrari, no back end is better than a Porsche. Part of the reason I fell in love with these cars was the experience I had sitting in heavy traffic because of an accident behind a C4S. Beautiful piece of sculpture!

POST 2Original post

Where are you located? Some private shop mechanics in Raleigh I would trust my life to. Others I would not let near my car. tmc

POST 3Original post

I asked the non-Porsche dealer from which I bought my car to take the car to the nearest Porsche dealer for a PPI. Pretty simple, and the Porsche dealer service department was very helpful even knowing that I did not live in the area.

POST 4Original post

I just took mine to the nearest dealer as well...expect around 2 hours to do. Just be weary of the fact that they will point out anything that's less than perfect (maybe so you'll pay them to do the labor and buy their parts) so take everything with a grain of salt.
