Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

There is a complete and totalled (unregistereable) 996TT a friend of mine found that is complete and looks like it will go for a song (<$10K). I has front and rear damage but neither look terrible.. probably cooling system impact on the front and mostly up to the bumper in the back. I think there is a good chance the powertrain is untouched. Interior looks mostly immaculate from the few pictures. Cluster works, has power, 70K on the odo. How crazy of an idea would it be to buy it for the powertrain and swap into an earlier C2? I am sure it wouldn't be plug and play, but electronics are all there. I probably can't seriously doing this as I am going on holidays for 2 weeks tomorrow (auction ends way before that) but I've wondered if the opportunity presents itself again, is it even worth considering? Also aware the TT is AWD :/ Of course buying a nice TT would be easier but that's not the question

POST 2Original post

Given that 996TT's aren't that expensive you would be better off just to buy a 996TT and would probably come out ahead. Not to mention how to fit all that widebody stuff (intercoolers, etc) into a narrow body chassis.

Hey if people put Corvette powertrains in these things why the hell not? I'm guessing you're looking at a NB body because rollers can be found easier than WB rollers. I'd imagine you'll have to do some cutting but if you're willing to try I'm willing to watch Anyone aware what the weight difference is between the M96 and the Mezger turbo?

POST 4Original post

Sure. Go for it! I know where there is a 996 TT cab for 7k. Throw that engine in and have a turbo for under 20k.

In my experience the best swaps are the ones where you have both the donor and the recipient side by side and can swap parts. It's the little stuff that ends up getting you and often drives unplanned extra expenditures. If you have both vehicles, and they are the same, it gets a whole lot easier. Wrecked TT driveline into a good TT chassis with no engine is easy peasy. That's what I'd do. Plug and play. TT engine into C2 chassis adds a lot of issues to deal with around intercooling, cooling, etc. Anything is possible with time and money, but I don't think it would be worth it. I still think gt3 into C2 would be cool, if you could get the GT3 wreck priced right.
