Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have read this is a common irritation among 996 owners. I kept hearing this random vibration type rattling from behind my drivers position, especially on rough roads. You know how sounds like this are, for the life of you, it's impossible to track down...and seems to move! With the help of this forum, I pinned it down to the transverse bar/rod going from the hanger hook to hanger hook under the headliner. When I put pressure on it, it goes away. Does anyone have a trick or technique to fix this problem without undoing the headliner? Maybe a foam pad inserted with extra long forceps or something thru the opening in the sunroof?? I'm sure I'm not the only one wanting to know this.

POST 2Original post

My wife used to make that sound, but it stopped when I took her out of the car..

POST 3Original post

If you want it done right you should probably remove the headliner and fix it. Perhaps you can upgrade to an Alcantara headliner in the mean time. Alternatively, there is always some sheet metal screw and a drill around the garage.

POST 5Original post

A chassis stethoscope would be the correct tool. Wear the headphones, drive over the rough road, get your wife(she is still in the back?) to move the stethoscope around to pinpoint the source of noise. If you are very limber, you may be able to move the 'scope around while driving? Search the web for "Chassis ear" or "engine ear"

POST 6Original post

Its the headliner support poles, rattling against the roof right at the rear by the rear screen, there are a few posts on here, its a super easy 30 minute fix. I put up with it for 18 months thinking it was a nightmare to remove a headliner and the risks of damaging it. Couldnt have been more wrong, its easy, simple and now the cars is a joy to drive over bumpy roads and you can open you sunroof without that annoving rattling
